Blefaroplasty

The eyelid surgery, technically defined blefaroplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes the skin and excess fat along the upper and lower eyelids. The blefaroplasty corrects the eyelid shooting that unfortunately gives a sense of fatigue and old age higher than the reality and which can sometimes interfere with proper sight. Moreover, the blefaroplasty fails to correct the crow's feet or to eliminate the black circles around the eyes. This kind of  surgery can be performed alone or in combination with a face-lift or a brow lift.
The best candidates for a blefaroplasty are those patients who wish to improve their physical appearance, with realistic expectations. Many of them have 35 years or more, but sometimes can be younger people especially when they have a heritage of palpebral 'bags'.
Caution should be used for those patients who have problems relating to ocular  diseases(hypothyroidism, glaucoma, etc.).

All surgeries carry with them a minimum of unpredictability and risk

If the blefaroplasty is performed by an expert plastic surgeon, complications are rare and usually minor. Irrelevant complications are considered problems like temporary oedema of the corner of the eye, a slight asymmetry of the scar, the appearance of small whiteheads along the suture points (which are also removed with a thin needle and with a simple operation during one of inspections).
Relevant complications should be considered lagoftalmo (incomplete closure of the upper eyelid) and ectropion (pulling down of the lower eyelid). These last two conditions require further surgery.

Preparing for surgery

It's a good practice, not to take Acetilsalic acid (aspirin) the previous week before the operation to prevent clotting problems, and for smokers to abstain for 4 weeks (two before and two after the operation)
Generally, this kind of surgery is performted in Day-Surgery  therefore is essential that the patient is accompanied by a person who can take care of the patient in the first 24-48 hours and bring the patient home. People using contact lenses, will have to suspend its use for 2 weeks.

The surgery

The blefaroplasty requires from one to three hours in relation to the number of eyelids to be corrected (only two or four). The incisions are carried out along the natural lines and extend up to the crow's feet just outside the eye angle. After the excess fat, responsible for palpebral "bags", and possibly skin if it is in excess, are removed. Sometimes even the muscle (orbicularis) is trimmed. The incisions are then resealed with fine subcuticular sutures.
Where in the lower eyelids, bags palpebral existes, but skin in excess is not present we can make a trans-conjunctival approach instead the traditional one.

The Anaesthesia

The blefaroplasty is generally performed in local anaesthesia, accompanied by a sedation (for more anxious patients).

After surgery

The eyes are extremely sensitive and therefore, in order to reduce oedema and bruising, are used in the first hours of post-operative, frost tablets. The pain has usually very light entity and is well controlled by analgesic drugs. If it should be strong is a good idea to immediately alert the surgeon. In the case of complete blefaroplasty, there is increased tearing for few days, temporary vision problems (nuisance to light, etc.)..
The stitches are removed from 3 to 7 days after surgery. It should be better to keep the head always raised, even at rest, at least for 2 or 3 days after surgery, to contain the swelling and bruising, which are the result of an absolutely individual reaction. The bruising tends to disappear generally within 2 weeks.

Resumption to the natural activity

The patient will return to watch television after 2 or three days and for reading will be appropriate to wait at least 6-7 days.
Many patients feel able to resume their activities and return to work even after 8-10 days, perhaps covering with a corrective and make up the signs of still present bruising.
However it's a good practice for everyone, refrain for at least 7 days from any activities, especially that could cause rise in blood pressure, as should be avoided taking alcohol that determine fluid retention. All sport activities must be suspended for 4 weeks.

The new look

The healing is a gradual process that takes place during months. After 2 weeks generally the world around us is not aware of the happening (being virtually disappeared all signs), but the time of healing are much longer.
The scar for example, before it becomes a white line, almost invisible, employs no less than 6 months.
We must also say that the results of rejuvenation and freshness will remain for years and for many patients this results could be even definitive.
The blefaroplasty can change the appearance and restore the lost self - confidence, but not necessarily change the look according to desires or change the attitude of people around us.
