Breast Reduction

Women who have a high volume breast have a pending and shooting breast, often accuse spine disorders due to excess of weight of the breasts; may have skin irritations and is very frequent that the bra worn leave real furrows on the shoulders.
In such cases the absolute indication is the breast reduction. The surgical procedure removes skin, fat tissue and glandular in excess, making the breasts smaller, lighter and harder. Even the areola is reduced to achieve the ultimate goal which is to return to a patient's womb best form proportionate to his body figure.

All surgeries carry with them a minimum of unpredictability and risk

The surgical procedure is important to be carried out only by qualified and experts plastic surgeons. It provides a long procedure and like all surgery presents general and specific complications associated with it. Among the generic complications we remember: seromas, hematomas, infections. Among those specific: the temporary or (sometime) permanent loss of feeling  of nipple-areola complex.
After a breast reduction permanent scars remain, they are covered by a bra or a swimming costume. Their evidence is related to subjective healing properties and is not fully predictable.

Preparing for surgery

It's a good practice, beginning with the previous week to not take Acetilsalic acid (aspirin) to prevent coagulation problems, and for smokers to abstain for at least 4 weeks (two before and two after the operation).
If you have veterans from an infection or a disease it would be prudent to postpone the surgery.

The surgery

There are many techniques for breast reduction, all aim to ensure the vitality of the total aureole-nipple and return a proper breast contour. The scar is usually in the form of reversed "T". Namely around the areola, thence vertically downwards and was then horizontally along the natural lower breast crease. You can sometimes associate liposuction to remove fatty tissue mainly in the lateral sides. The surgery takes about three hours. Generally drainage tubes are placed and removed after 48 hours. A compression bandage is left for the first two days.
The different aspects of this procedure should be thoroughly examined case by case and discussed with the surgeon in the consultation.

The Anesthesia

The breast reduction is always performed in General Anaesthesia.

After surgery

After surgery the swelling tends to disappear in 4-6 weeks. The pain is very modest, well controlled by drugs and quickly leaves the place a nuisance. The post-operative bandage is replaced in the second day by a conformed bra that is worn for about four weeks.
The only cutaneous stitches are removed on the seventh day (most of sutures are sub-cuticular).

Resumption to activity

The normal activities may be resumed in the third day. Physical forced activity (gymnastics, various sports,…) is interrupted for four weeks.

The new look

As well the swelling will disappear in few weeks, actually many months are necessary before the breast settle down in the new shape.
The breast reduction can change the appearance and restore the lost self-confidence, but not necessarily change look according to desires or to change the attitude of people around us.
